(Learning) Perl is better than (learning) French because ...

It doesn't matter how you pronounce Perl.

After two hours of studying Perl, I could write programs in it to do various useful bits of text file manipulation... after two hours of studying French, my conversation appears to be limited to telling people I'm a ghost, I'm married, and my name is Lisa.

Perl doesn't require constant CD-ROM spinning.

Perl doesn't have squiggles over perfectly good letters.

Heh. On the other hand, I think French doesn't trick me into thinking I am more competent than I really am and thus getting myself into jams of bad logic or organization.

I forget, do you read xkcd? In case not, I give you a few strips. Don't forget to hover your mouse over the image for the alt-text.

Hee! Yes, I am a fan of XKCD (in fact I just made a mod to the recent cartoon about CERN to put it in the context of the SNS up the road), but I'd forgotten that Lisp one.
